VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

My Friends House volunteers reflect the core value of the organization by treating all with dignity and respect.  Volunteers are expected to be friendly, polite, helpful, courteous and compassionate.  Volunteers, whether or not they are Christian, should reflect the love of Christ in their actions and interactions.

My Friends House operates solely on volunteers.  Volunteer consistency and reliability are essential to our ability to serve our consumers effectively, efficiently and reliably.  Training will be provided.  Background checks are conducted.

Hunger Prevention Program

The Hunger Prevention Program has two components, the food pantry and the urban garden.

Food Pantry:

MFH distributes food to 100-150 households every Wednesday morning between 9:00-11:00.  Our consumers select what they need and want from the products available.

Volunteers prepare for the weekly distribution Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Hours are flexible depending on position, but typically are from 7:30 AM-12:30 PM

Food Bank Buyer

The buyer is the primary person selecting items to be ordered from the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank in consultation with the Food Distribution Coordinator.

The buyer makes weekly or as needed visits to the food bank to select those items necessary to maintain a balance selection of food to be distributed each week.

Must be able to lift or move up to 50 pounds.

Volunteer Gardeners

The volunteer gardeners will work in the garden under the direction of the master gardener.  Volunteers will prepare the soil, plant seeds/seedling, nurture and harvest the products.  No experience is necessary.  Volunteers should have an interest in or desire to learn about growing food.  All ages welcomed.  Children under 14 must have an adult volunteer with them.  Hours and schedule are flexible.

Food Distribution Coordinator

The coordinator is responsible for the day to day operation of the weekly food distribution program.

The coordinator ensures that food is picked up from donating partners and prepared for distribution in a timely manner and in quantities to accommodate the expected day’s recipients; supervises assigned volunteers, and maintains accurate records of donated food items, volunteer hours, and other data as required.
